Winthrop opened in 1886 to train women as teachers and became fully coeducational in 1974. Its campus in Rock Hill, South Carolina, is anchored by Tillman Hall, a red-brick building with a clock tower. The public university is known for education, business and the visual and performing arts. Charlotte is about twenty-five miles north, close enough for internships and weekend trips.

Campus is small and walkable, with oak-lined paths, a lake at the edge of campus and residence halls close to classes. Downtown Rock Hill, with restaurants and a few breweries, is nearby.
Rock Hill hosts a lot of amateur sport, including a BMX supercross track and a velodrome. Charlotte Douglas International Airport is about half an hour away, and costs are lower than in Charlotte.

Winthrop reads applications on a rolling basis. International students should apply by June for fall and October for spring to leave time for the I-20 and visa appointment.
There are fall (August) and spring (January) intakes for most undergraduate and graduate programmes.
You'll need an F-1 visa. Once you accept your offer and send proof of funding, Winthrop University issues the Form I-20. After that it's the SEVIS fee, the DS-160 form and an interview at a US embassy or consulate.
Business, computer science, mass communication, visual arts and the MBA are popular. Undergraduates need a secondary school record and IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 72. The MBA needs a bachelor's degree; arts programmes may ask for a portfolio or audition.
Winthrop offers merit scholarships to some international undergraduates, which can lower the out-of-state rate. Graduate assistantships are available in some departments.
