About thirty miles east of Charlotte, in the small town of Wingate, sits a private university that began in 1896 as a Baptist school for the surrounding farm country. Wingate is best known for health sciences, including a pharmacy school, physician assistant studies and physical therapy. Its W'International programme sends students abroad for a short study trip, heavily subsidised by the university. Undergraduate classes are small.

Wingate is a very small town, and the university is most of it. Campus life centres on residence halls, athletics and student clubs, and a car is useful for anything further afield.
Monroe is next door for shopping, and Charlotte is under an hour's drive, with an international airport, pro sports and big-city jobs. Summers are hot and humid; winters are mild.

Wingate reviews undergraduate applications on a rolling basis. International students should apply by spring for fall. The Doctor of Pharmacy and other health programmes use their own deadlines, often set through PharmCAS or CASPA.
Undergraduates can start in fall (August) or spring (January). Most health graduate programmes start once a year.
It's the F-1 student visa. Get your I-20 from Wingate University first (they need your deposit and bank documents), then pay the SEVIS fee, complete the DS-160 and attend the visa interview. Book the interview early in peak season.
Biology, business, exercise science and the pharmacy doctorate are popular. Undergraduates need secondary school results and IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 70. Health doctorates need prerequisite science courses and, for pharmacy, an interview.
Wingate offers merit scholarships to international undergraduates, and athletic scholarships go to recruited athletes. Graduate awards are limited.
