Cullowhee is a mountain valley on the Tuckasegee River, about an hour west of Asheville, and Western Carolina University takes up most of it. The public university has around 11,000 students and strong programmes in engineering, nursing, construction management and forensic science. Its outdoor forensic research station is one of only a handful in the US.

Campus is in a narrow valley ringed by forested ridges. There's not much town, so student life centres on campus and the outdoors.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park is under an hour away, and Asheville has the breweries and music. A car helps a lot here.

Passport valid six months beyond stay
WCU reviews international applications on a rolling basis. Apply by about May for fall and October for spring to allow time for the I-20.
Most programmes start in August and January. Nursing admits students into the major once a year.
It's the F-1 student visa. Get your I-20 from Western Carolina University first (they need your deposit and bank documents), then pay the SEVIS fee, complete the DS-160 and attend the visa interview. Book the interview early in peak season.
Engineering, forensic science, construction management, the MBA and nursing are popular. Undergraduates need a secondary school diploma and TOEFL 71 or IELTS 6.0; graduate programmes need a bachelor's degree and IELTS 6.5.
WCU offers some international scholarships, and NC Promise already keeps undergraduate tuition low. Graduate students can apply for assistantships.
