Founded in 1865 as Lincoln College, Washburn is one of the few US universities funded partly by its home city, Topeka. It's a public university of about 6,000 students with a law school and strong nursing, business and criminal justice programmes. Tuition is low. Students get a front-row view of state government, since Topeka is the Kansas capital.

Washburn reviews international applications on a rolling basis. Apply by about June for fall and October for spring.
Most students start in fall (August) or spring (January).
International students come in on an F-1 visa. The I-20 comes from Washburn University after you confirm your place and show you can cover a year of costs; you then pay the SEVIS fee, fill in the DS-160 and book your consulate interview.
Computer information sciences, business, nursing, the MBA and law are popular. Undergraduates need a secondary school record and IELTS 6.0. The JD needs a bachelor's degree and LSAT scores.
Washburn offers international scholarships that reduce tuition, based on grades. Check the international admissions page for current amounts.
