Winchester was a royal capital under Alfred the Great, and its university sits on West Hill, a ten-minute walk from the cathedral. It opened in 1840 as a Church of England teacher training college and is still small. Education, creative writing, psychology, archaeology, sport and business are its main subjects. The South Downs begin at the edge of town.
