UNC Pembroke opened in 1887 as a school to train American Indian teachers, set up by the Lumbee community of Robeson County. It's now part of the University of North Carolina system and keeps one of the strongest American Indian identities of any US public university. As an NC Promise campus, its undergraduate tuition is a very low flat rate, including for out-of-state students. Programmes run from business and nursing to computer science and social work.

Programmes start in fall (August) and spring (January). Nursing admits students to its upper-level courses on a separate cycle.
You'll need an F-1 visa. Once you accept your offer and send proof of funding, University of North Carolina at Pembroke issues the Form I-20. After that it's the SEVIS fee, the DS-160 form and an interview at a US embassy or consulate.
Computer science, business administration, nursing and the MBA are popular. Undergraduates need completed secondary school and IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 61. Graduate programmes ask for a bachelor's degree and IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 79.
NC Promise already keeps undergraduate tuition low. UNCP also has some merit scholarships, and a few departments offer graduate assistantships. Ask the international office which awards F-1 students can apply for.
