The University of Minnesota Duluth sits on a hillside above Lake Superior, the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area. With around 10,000 students, it's the University of Minnesota system's second-largest campus, and its buildings are linked by indoor walkways, which helps in a Duluth winter. Engineering, business and the natural sciences are the main draws, and the Large Lakes Observatory studies big lakes worldwide.

Duluth climbs steep hills above Lake Superior, with the Aerial Lift Bridge, Canal Park and the Lakewalk along the shore. Ocean-going ships reach the harbour through the Great Lakes.
Winters are long and snowy, and summers are mild. The Twin Cities are about two and a half hours south, and the North Shore road to Canada is a favourite weekend drive.

UMD reviews undergraduate applications on a rolling basis; international students should apply by about May for fall. Graduate programmes set their own deadlines, often in early spring.
Most programmes start in fall (late August). Many undergraduate majors also admit in January.
International students come in on an F-1 visa. The I-20 comes from University of Minnesota Duluth after you confirm your place and show you can cover a year of costs; you then pay the SEVIS fee, fill in the DS-160 and book your consulate interview.
Mechanical engineering, computer science, business and engineering management are popular. Undergraduates need school grades and IELTS 6.5; graduate programmes need a relevant bachelor's degree and IELTS 6.5.
UMD offers some merit scholarships to international undergraduates, and many graduate students get teaching or research assistantships.
