UMaine's campus is on Marsh Island, between the Penobscot and Stillwater rivers in Orono, a small town just north of Bangor. Founded in 1865 as a land-grant college, it's the state's flagship university. Its Advanced Structures and Composites Center made headlines for 3D-printing a boat and a house from wood-based materials. Forestry, marine science and engineering are the other strengths.

Orono is a small college town, and most students live on or near campus. Bangor, a few miles south, has the shops, an airport and a big waterfront concert venue.
Winters are long and snowy, with cross-country skiing on campus trails. Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor are about an hour and a quarter away on the coast.

UMaine has an early action deadline in December for undergraduates, then rolling review. Graduate deadlines vary by programme, and many funded places are decided by January or February for fall.
Most programmes start in fall (late August). Many also admit in January.
International students come in on an F-1 visa. The I-20 comes from University of Maine after you confirm your place and show you can cover a year of costs; you then pay the SEVIS fee, fill in the DS-160 and book your consulate interview.
Mechanical and civil engineering, forestry, marine biology and the MBA are popular. Undergraduates need secondary school results and IELTS 6.5; graduate programmes need a relevant bachelor's degree, and some expect the GRE.
Yes. UMaine gives merit scholarships to international undergraduates, and graduate students in research programmes are often funded through assistantships.
