Troy, Alabama, is a town of about 20,000 people surrounded by farmland and pine forest in the south-east of the state. The university began there in 1887 as a school for training teachers. Today it has one of the larger international student groups in Alabama, many of them in computer science and business at master's level. There are also campuses in Dothan, Montgomery and Phenix City.

The main campus is compact and walkable, with residence halls, Trojan Arena and a quiet town square a few minutes away. Summers are long and humid, and winters are mild.
Troy is small and cheap, and a car makes life easier. Montgomery is under an hour north, and the Gulf beaches around Panama City are about two and a half hours' drive.

Troy admits on a rolling basis for each term. Aim to finish your application about three months before the term starts, so there's time for the I-20 and the visa appointment.
Troy runs fall, spring and summer terms, so international students can start in August, January or June. Most new graduate students choose August or January.
It's the F-1 student visa. Get your I-20 from Troy University first (they need your deposit and bank documents), then pay the SEVIS fee, complete the DS-160 and attend the visa interview. Book the interview early in peak season.
Computer science at master's level, the MBA and business administration are the main draws. Graduate programmes need a bachelor's degree, a reasonable GPA and IELTS 6.0; undergraduate entry uses school grades and IELTS 6.0.
Troy offers international undergraduates scholarships, and some graduate students get assistantships. Awards are usually decided with the offer, so apply early.
