The Shawangunk Ridge fills the skyline west of New Paltz, and climbers come from all over the Northeast to the cliffs they call the Gunks. SUNY New Paltz sits in the village below, about 90 minutes north of New York City. It's a public college of around 7,000 students with well-regarded fine arts and metal programmes, engineering, business and teacher education.

New Paltz is a small, walkable village with centuries-old stone houses on Huguenot Street, cafes on Main Street and a rail trail running through town.
Trailways buses reach Manhattan's Port Authority in about ninety minutes. Rent in the village is above upstate averages but far below New York City's.

Passport valid six months beyond stay
New Paltz sets priority dates for first-year applicants in the winter and reviews many graduate and transfer applications on a rolling basis. International students should apply by spring for fall or by October for spring.
Most students start in fall (late August); many programmes also admit in spring (January).
You'll need an F-1 visa. Once you accept your offer and send proof of funding, State University of New York at New Paltz issues the Form I-20. After that it's the SEVIS fee, the DS-160 form and an interview at a US embassy or consulate.
Engineering, computer science, business and fine arts draw most international students. Undergraduates need secondary school results and IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 80, and art applicants submit a portfolio. Master's programmes need a relevant bachelor's degree.
New Paltz offers some merit scholarships to international undergraduates, and graduate assistantships in certain departments. Awards are limited, so ask about them when you apply.
