FAMU, as almost everyone calls it, is Florida's only public historically Black university, founded in 1887 on a hill in Tallahassee. It's best known for its pharmacy college, its School of Business and Industry and its engineering college, which it runs jointly with Florida State. The Marching 100 band is famous in its own right. About 9,000 students attend.

Undergraduate deadlines are usually in spring for fall and in autumn for spring. Graduate and pharmacy programmes set their own, earlier deadlines.
Most programmes start in August, and many also admit in January.
International students come in on an F-1 visa. The I-20 comes from FAMU after you confirm your place and show you can cover a year of costs; you then pay the SEVIS fee, fill in the DS-160 and book your consulate interview.
Pharmacy, computer information systems, engineering and business are popular. Undergraduates need secondary school grades and English scores. Graduate programmes need a relevant bachelor's degree.
FAMU offers some merit scholarships, and graduate assistantships in some departments. Ask the international office which awards are open to you.
