Founded in 1849 as Michigan State Normal School, Eastern Michigan was the first teacher-training college west of the Alleghenies. Education is still a core strength, but today it's a public university of about 14,000 students with engineering technology, cybersecurity, business and health programmes. Ypsilanti is next door to Ann Arbor, and the two blur together along Washtenaw Avenue.

Form I-20 issued by EMU
Proof of funds for one academic year
SEVIS I-901 fee payment receipt
Completed DS-160 online application
US embassy or consulate interview
Passport valid six months beyond stay
EMU accepts international applications on a rolling basis. Apply at least three to four months before the term starts; some graduate programmes have earlier cut-offs.
The main intakes are fall, starting late August or early September, and winter, starting in January.
You'll need an F-1 visa. Once you accept your offer and send proof of funding, EMU issues the Form I-20. After that it's the SEVIS fee, the DS-160 form and an interview at a US embassy or consulate.
Computer science, cybersecurity, construction management and the MBA are popular with international students. Graduate programmes need a relevant bachelor's degree and IELTS 6.5. Undergraduates need secondary school completion.
EMU gives international undergraduates merit scholarships based on grades, and some graduate students get assistantships.
