Opened in 1849 as the New Britain Normal School, CCSU is the oldest publicly funded university in Connecticut. New Britain was once called the Hardware City, and Stanley Black & Decker is still headquartered there. The university is strong in engineering and technology, business, education and computer science, and its data science master's draws international students. Hartford is about 15 minutes away.
