Get off the 2 or 5 train at Flatbush Avenue and you are at the gates of Brooklyn College, one of the senior colleges of the City University of New York. The campus is built around a quad of Georgian-style buildings, including the library's clock tower. It is known for computer science, accounting, psychology and the arts, and its graduate film school is based at Steiner Studios in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Tuition is low for New York City.

The campus is in Midwood, a quiet residential area with Flatbush Avenue's shops nearby. Most students commute from apartments across Brooklyn and Queens.
Brooklyn gives you New York at slightly lower prices than Manhattan, though rent is still high. The subway reaches Manhattan in about 40 minutes.
Form I-20 issued by Brooklyn College
Proof of funds for one academic year
SEVIS I-901 fee payment receipt
Completed DS-160 online application
US embassy or consulate interview
Passport valid six months beyond stay
Undergraduates apply through the CUNY application, usually by February for fall. Graduate programmes set their own deadlines, often in spring for fall entry. Allow extra time for the I-20.
Most programmes start in fall, and many also admit in spring.
International students come in on an F-1 visa. The I-20 comes from Brooklyn College after you confirm your place and show you can cover a year of costs; you then pay the SEVIS fee, fill in the DS-160 and book your consulate interview.
Computer science, accounting, psychology and the MFA in cinema arts are popular. Undergraduates need secondary results and IELTS 6.5; master's programmes need a bachelor's degree, and film asks for a portfolio.
Scholarships for international students are limited, but CUNY tuition is already low. Some departments offer awards.
