When the Montgomery Bus Boycott began in 1955, leaflets calling for it were printed at Alabama State by English professor Jo Ann Robinson. The historically Black university was founded in 1867 in Marion and moved to Montgomery in 1887. Today it offers business, sciences, health programmes and education, and its Hornets sports teams draw huge crowds.
